MMB celebrates 12,000th milk donor!

Kathryn Brecht is a neonatal nurse practitioner who spends her days caring for fragile newborns.  On June 1, she gave birth to her second healthy baby, Maximilian, and she knew she was lucky.  “I’m very fortunate that I produce more milk than my baby needs.”    She knew she wanted to donate her milk.  “When babies are born prematurely, they have many obstacles to overcome before they can go home. Providing them with good nutrition is key to helping them grow so they can overcome these obstacles. I am delighted that my donor human milk will play a part in helping them thrive and go home.”

Kathryn was the Mothers’ Milk Bank’s 12,000 donor since opening its doors 33 years ago.

Brecht encourages other mothers to share their gift of life.   “I’ve taken care of many babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit over the past 11 years, first as a bedside nurse and now as a neonatal nurse practitioner, and witness daily the benefits of donor human milk. If you are a breastfeeding mother and have a surplus of milk, please consider donating it to help premature babies. Providing these babies with good nutrition is vital to getting them home, and a little bit of your milk truly goes a long way! If you’re like me, you might be leery of committing to anything that might take up your time in an already busy life with small children. If you’re already pumping and collecting milk for your own baby, the most time-consuming part of the donation process is already done! “

MMB thanks Kathryn for sharing the gift of life!

Your gift makes a difference

The dollars that go to RMCHF go directly to patients and their families and that sets this foundation apart from others where fundraising is for the bricks and the mortar and the equipment. It’s really for the families and the patients. -Dr. Steve Leonard
