September is Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Awareness Month, an important time to recognize the unique challenges faced by babies, families, and medical professionals in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
At Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation, we have the great honor of working with these families day in and day out, and we understand how difficult the journey can be for premature and medically fragile infants who require intensive care. For families navigating life in the NICU, every choice matters, and one of the most vital decisions is how to feed their baby. That’s where donor human milk can make all the difference.
Babies who require NICU care are often premature, leaving their digestive systems underdeveloped. For these babies, human milk—whether a parent’s own or from a donor—is the ideal source of nutrition. Human milk’s unique nutritional profile is rich in antibodies. It is easily digestible, promoting growth and protecting against life-threatening intestinal infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). When a baby is in the NICU and a parent’s own milk is unavailable or needs supplementation, donor human milk from our Mothers’ Milk Bank (MMB) program bridges the gap, keeps their tiny bellies full, and helps ensure they have the nutrients they need.
By providing pasteurized donor human milk to NICUs, with the help of our generous milk donors, MMB is not just making a difference—it’s truly saving lives. In fact, just one ounce of donor human milk can keep a micro preemie fed for a full day, giving vulnerable infants the nutrition they need to thrive, and giving NICU parents the peace of mind they need to focus on their baby. This is the impact we can achieve together, and with NICU admission rates on the rise, the need is only growing.
In honor of NICU Awareness Month, we’re spreading the word about the difference human milk donation can make for the most vulnerable infants. We’re asking families who have more milk than their baby needs to consider becoming a donor. By donating your milk, you can make an incredible impact on families navigating their NICU journey—and even save lives along the way.
